The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services is gearing up for the highly anticipated launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa set to preside over the event. This milestone comes as the country witnesses a significant surge in investment within the ICT sector, growing over 1% in the past year.

Speaking recently at the Ministry’s engagement meeting in Harare, ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetara highlighted the sector’s achievements, attributing the success to partnerships with various stakeholders. “Let me reflect on the progress we’ve made so far,” Mavetara said, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to harnessing AI for national development.

This National AI Strategy anticipates to place Zimbabwe as Africa’s champion – in – tech, driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens. Zimbabwe is utilizing artificial intelligence in key areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and education.

Mavetara revealed that the strategy focuses on cultivating indigenous people’s skills from within, attracting investment, and creating a regulatory framework that supports AI growth. “We are working tirelessly to ensure Zimbabwe becomes a hub for AI innovation in the region,” she added.

This timeous auspicious occasion will unlock and attract key players, including tech industry leaders, government officials, and international partners. With the sector’s growth, Zimbabwe is poised to unlock new opportunities in the digital economy.

As the country prepares for the launch, there’s excitement building around the potential of AI to transform Zimbabwe’s economy. The ministry’s efforts to promote digital literacy and infrastructure development are expected to complement the AI strategy.
