Budiriro South Legislator Hon. Darlington Chigumbu recently emphasized the need for a solid foundation to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) development in Zimbabwe.
Speaking during a plenary session at the Tech Convergence Forum (TCF) hosted by TechnoMag, Chigumbu highlighted several key areas, including data collection, digitalization, and a national AI strategy.
He stressed that,” Zimbabwe requires a centralized data warehouse to provide easy access to data for university students, researchers, and professionals”.
He also emphasized the importance of digitizing data stored in national archives to make it usable for AI and other applications.
Regarding legislation and regulation, Chigumbu expressed concerns that regulating AI too early could stifle innovation and hinder the development of AI in Zimbabwe. Instead, he advocated for a clear national strategy that guides the adoption and development of AI, taking into account the country’s specific needs and priorities.
His comments during the plenary session underscores the importance of careful planning and strategic development to ensure Zimbabwe’s AI sector can thrive.
