Zimbabwe’s Sables rugby team has secured its place at the 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup in the United States, Canada and Uruguay, with United States (US) Ambassador Pamela M. Tremont hailing the qualification as proof of Zimbabwe’s growing excellence in global sport.

“We’re thrilled the Zimbabwe Sables will soon travel to the United States for the 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Uruguay,” Ambassador Tremont said at the US Embassy’s FIFA World Cup 2026 launch in Harare.

Tremont called this proof of “strong sporting ties between our nations and Zimbabwe’s excellence”. The Ambassador said the US is proud to welcome Zimbabwean athletes and looks forward to cheering on the Sables as they compete against top-tier nations.

The 2026 Nations Cup marks a strategic moment for rugby’s expansion in North America. With the US co-hosting, the tournament will use the same smart stadium infrastructure and broadcast technology being deployed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, offering Zimbabwe’s team unprecedented exposure.

For Zimbabwe, the Sables’ participation is more than sport. It’s data, visibility and opportunity. AI-driven performance analytics, real-time player tracking, and digital fan platforms will showcase Zimbabwean talent to scouts, sponsors and diaspora audiences in real time.

Ambassador Tremont tied the rugby bid to a broader US sports decade. “FIFA World Cup 2026 is only the beginning,” she said, noting at least 10 major international sporting events through 2034 including LA 2028 Olympics. The Sables enter that pipeline as Zimbabwe’s rugby ambassadors.

The technical stakes are high. The US, Canada and Uruguay will run cloud-based broadcasting, 5G stadium connectivity and biometric fan experiences. For the Sables, that means performance data becomes a global asset, not just match statistics.

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sport, ZOC and rugby administrators were present at the Harare event. Their engagement with US and Canadian diplomats signals intent to build partnerships around training, sports science and youth development linked to the Nations Cup.

Tremont reiterated pride in welcoming Zimbabwean athletes. “We’re proud to welcome Zimbabwean athletes to America and look forward to cheering on the Sables as they compete,” she said, framing rugby as a bridge for cultural and economic ties.

With the World Cup and Nations Cup converging in 2026, Zimbabwe has a rare dual-platform moment. The Sables’ journey will be tracked through digital highlights, AI commentary and social platforms — turning every tackle and try into soft power for the nation.
