US Ambassador Pamela M. Tremont has framed FIFA World Cup 2026 as the start of a decade-long era of international sport in America, with the US set to host at least 10 major events through 2034 including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“FIFA World Cup 2026 is only the beginning,” Ambassador Tremont said at a joint launch party with the Canadian Embassy in Harare. She highlighted that the US will host 75 percent of World Cup matches — 78 games across 11 cities — culminating in the final four matches.
The June 12 event brought together Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Sport, ZIFA, ZOC, sports federations and diplomatic community. Football-themed trivia and shoot-out challenges underscored the tournament’s cultural reach beyond the pitch.
Tremont told guests the 2026 edition breaks two records: 48 teams for the first time, and three host nations for the first time. She said this format reflects how global sport is evolving through collaboration, technology and expanded access.
The Ambassador linked the tournament to America’s 250th anniversary commemorations. “It has been 32 years since the United States hosted the World Cup and this year’s tournament is truly historic,” she said, tying sporting heritage to national milestones.
She emphasized the opportunity for host cities to demonstrate world-class hospitality and infrastructure. With AI, smart stadiums and digital broadcasting advancing, Tremont said the 2026 World Cup will showcase how technology enhances fan experience and global reach.
Zimbabwe’s participation in future US-hosted sport was also celebrated. The Zimbabwe Sables will compete in the 2026 World Rugby Nations Cup in the US, Canada and Uruguay. Tremont called this proof of “strong sporting ties between our nations and Zimbabwe’s excellence”.
For diplomacy, sport is becoming soft power infrastructure. The Embassy event brought together alumni of US exchange programs, athletes and administrators to build networks that extend beyond the 90 minutes on the field.
The World Cup launch forms part of a year-long Embassy program marking both 2026 and America’s 250th anniversary. Tremont said sport creates bridges between communities, economies and cultures during periods of global change.
“Two Embassies, Three Host Nations, One Beautiful Game” captured the spirit in Harare. As broadcasting and digital platforms scale for 104 matches, the tournament will test how sport, technology and diplomacy converge to connect billions worldwide.
