Econet Wireless says it is putting millions into farming and mobile money to create jobs, even though it is not an agricultural company.

CEO Dr Douglas Mboweni said the two sectors were chosen because they deliver jobs quickly for Zimbabweans returning from South Africa, following a directive from Group Chairman Mr Strive Masiyiwa.

Fruit For China, Jobs For Zimbabwe is also in the offing. Dr Mboweni said Econet plans to expand its AgriTech operations that produce fruit for export to China.
“‘We are not farmers, but we are putting money into agricultural initiatives because they are a quick way to create jobs,” he said.

The expansion is expected to create hundreds of jobs in orchards, packing sheds, transport and logistics, particularly in rural areas where many returnees are settling.

15,000 ECOCASH Agents By Christmas are on the cards. The biggest jobs number will come from EcoCash. The mobile money unit plans to recruit 15,000 new agents before Christmas.
“Each time we appoint a new agent, that results in at least two jobs. So this is one way we think we can help,” Dr Mboweni said.

Based on that model, the rollout could create over 30,000 jobs directly and indirectly, as new agents hire assistants, rent shops, and support family members.

Dr Mboweni said Econet was in talks with government on both initiatives.
“As industry and business, we have to use all the tools at our disposal to help our fellow citizens,” he said.

He called on other companies to identify similar opportunities, even if only on a temporary basis, to help alleviate the difficulties faced by people returning from South Africa.
