Econet Wireless is set to create about 2,000 jobs in the short term by accelerating construction work at its flagship Econet Tech City project.

The announcement was made by Econet Zimbabwe CEO Dr Douglas Mboweni, who said the move was part of a broader jobs drive ordered by Group Chairman Mr Strive Masiyiwa to assist Zimbabweans returning from South Africa.

“For instance, we are looking at how we can fast-track some of our work at Econet Tech City, particularly construction. We could provide about 2 000 jobs in the short term as we ramp up construction,” Dr Mboweni said.

The multi-billion dollar Tech City project in Harare has been on the cards for years and is expected to house technology firms, offices, and residential units.

By speeding up construction, Econet says it can immediately absorb both skilled and unskilled labour, from builders and electricians to suppliers and security.

Dr Mboweni said the jobs would not be limited to permanent staff. “We are looking at various projects aimed primarily at creating even temporary jobs,” he noted.

The company is working with government to ensure the project aligns with national employment goals.
