Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information Communications Technologies (ICT) Tatenda Mavetera, has emphasized the importance of harnessing the country’s technological talent to drive national development through Artificial Intelligence (AI) for an AI driven economy. Speaking during the second assessment of the national AI strategy, Minister Mavetera highlighted the potential of AI to transform key sectors and drive economic growth. “Zimbabweans are leading technological institutions globally, presenting an opportunity for national development,” he said, underscoring the need to leverage this talent to create a thriving AI ecosystem.

AI has the potential to revolutionize key sectors such as agriculture and healthcare, driving economic development and creating efficient government services. The strategy’s emphasis on developing AI infrastructure, computational sovereignty, startups, and innovation hubs is crucial in unlocking this potential.

A critical aspect of the strategy is developing Zimbabwe’s talent in AI. Minister Mavetera emphasized the importance of transforming education systems to produce AI creators, not just consumers, and upskilling the workforce for an AI-driven economy.

The strategy’s emphasis on ethics, privacy, and security is commendable. Minister Mavetera stressed the need for a national AI framework that balances innovation with ethics, ensuring that AI adoption is fair, accountable, transparent, and free from bias.

As Zimbabwe moves forward with its AI strategy, critical thinking and challenging assumptions will be essential in identifying gaps and creating a robust framework. With careful planning and execution, Zimbabwe’s AI strategy has the potential to drive economic development, transform key sectors, and create a brighter future for its citizens.
