The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is taking strides into the new digital age with the development of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) for smart policing, this innovative system is set to launch soon and its being jointly developed by the ZRP and the Zimbabwe Centre for High-Performance Computing (ZCHPC).
The AFIS is expected to revolutionize crime detection, prevention, and investigation by enabling the police to quickly and accurately identify suspects. With this technology, the ZRP will be able to analyze fingerprints found at crime scenes and match them with existing records in the database.
According to Police Commissioner-General Steven Mutamba, the new system will bring about a modern way of handling criminal cases, making investigations faster and more efficient. This technology is already being used in well-developed countries, and its adoption in Zimbabwe is a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to enhance national security and public service delivery.
He said,”This is something that we have been longing for. When it comes to investigations, it’s not an easy thing to do, especially when you would like to identify persons that have committed crimes.
“You will perhaps know, when someone has broken into premises, one of the critical pieces of evidence that is required is something that can show that Mr So-and-So or Ms So-and-So broke into someone’s property,” he said.
The development of the AFIS is part of the ZRP’s efforts to leverage technology to improve its services. The system is expected to have a significant impact on the police force’s ability to prevent and investigate crimes, and it will also help to enhance the overall safety and security of citizens.
