Zimbabwe’s Data Cheapest In SADC – Machengete

Dr Gift Callistos Machengete, the Director General of the Post and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has defended Data Affordability in Zimbabwe saying it is the cheapest in the Southern African Development Community(SADC) region.

Addressing a Parliamentary Committee on ICT, the POTRAZ boss said Zimbabwe has one of the most affordable data prices in the region.

Machengete explained that the only reason data appears exorbitant results from people’s salaries who opt for packages beyond their reach meant for organizations and not individuals.

“The cost of data in Zimbabwe is one of cheapest in the region, the only problem is people have low disposal income which makes the data seem expensive,” tge Director General said.

Dr. Machengete explained to the portfolio committee that the reason why people think that data is expensive is because they are purchasing expensive unlimited data plans without considering how much data they actually need.

Machengete confirmed that unlimited data plans which seem costly and making data expensive are made for Corporations and not for personal individuals.

“Another issue with data is that some people are buying expensive unlimited data plans without considering how much data they actually need. Unlimited data plans sometimes are meant for companies with many users like 300 people, not for individual consumers,” said Machengete.
