*Hwange Units 7 & 8 Boost Zimbabwe’s Power Output to 11,082 GWh in 2024*
Zimbabwe’s electricity generation received a major boost in 2024, with Hwange Thermal Power Station Units 7 and 8 producing a combined 11,082 gigawatt-hours (GWh)—a notable increase from 10,096 GWh recorded in 2023. The figures were revealed in the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) 2024 Annual Report.
According to the report, the surge in output from these two units significantly reduced the country’s reliance on electricity imports during the year. Of the total energy generated, Hwange Units 7 and 8 contributed 4,918 GWh, positioning them as the dominant domestic energy source in 2024.
The two units are part of a major Chinese-funded expansion project at the Hwange Thermal Power Station, located approximately 780 km from Harare. The expansion was undertaken by Sinohydro, a Chinese engineering firm, and was officially commissioned in August 2023. It added two new generators (Units 7 and 8) to the station’s original six, boosting national generation capacity.
ZERA praised the development, noting that the improved energy supply from Hwange reflects steady progress in stabilizing Zimbabwe’s power grid and reducing dependency on foreign energy sources.
