ICT Minister Mavetera Meets Google VP, James Manyika

The Minister of ICT, Postal, and Courier Services, Hon Tatenda Mavetera, met the Google Vice President over the weekend in a meeting where they discussed various opportunities and possibilities for Zimbabwe’s tech ecosystem.
Speaking to the ICT minister after their meeting, she reflected that it was a very good meeting punctuated with honesty and clarity on where Zimbabwe is and should be in the tech space.
“One key issue that Dr. Manyika zeroed in on was how Zimbabwe needs to improve and build digital infrastructure. We may have high internet penetration rates, but those rates are meaningless if our connectivity is poor and inefficient.
Dr. Manyika added that AI is a game-changer that can be utilized to catch up with the Western world.
“One of the key issues raised by Dr. Manyika was that the crafting of policies must produce policies that are harmonized with regional policies to ensure that Zimbabwe is positioned as a regional tech hub where investors can expand into Africa.
In terms of plans for Zimbabwe, Dr. Manyika said that he was in Zimbabwe on a private visit and that he was willing to aid his home country to ensure that it becomes a jewel in the African tech space.
