Zimbabwe, for the first time ever Will be hosting an ICT Challenge for girls aged 13-23yrs , dubbed “Technovation Challenge”that we will be running from February 2014 with the top prize of $20 000 to commercialise the product.
In a bid to encourage woman participation in the world`s fastest developing industry, Woman will be called out to pitch up their various ICT related projects where they will then compete for the top prize.
Speaking to TechnoMag, Aretha Mare The Zimbabwean coordinator, said “The top 10 winning teams will be
selected to present their prototypes before investors and the winner given $20000 to commercialize their product.”
“The overall goal of the challenge is to encourage more girls to pursue careers in technology. The girls will work in teams of 4-5, have a teacher and a mentor”. She added.
In the competition the girls will be taught how to code and build mobile apps as solution to challenges they face
in their communities. They will also be taught entrepreneurial skills, like how to write business plans and how to pitch their ideas before investors.
The local organisers are also are looking for individuals/organizations to collaborate or partner with to see this vision touching and changing the girl child’s life via technology.
Aretha Mare was one of the 5 TechWomen in Zimbabwe who had the chance to be in Silicon Valley for five weeks and worked at leading Hi-tech companies.
