The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (Z.U.J) will this year hold its annual National Journalist Arts and Merits Award, NJAMA without the ICT category.
We attended a press briefing where the secretary general of ZUJ Mr Foster Dongozi confirmed that it was not a mistake, but rather they are fully aware of the absence of the category.
According to unofficial information with ZUJ , they stated that the sponsor of the category had pulled out last minute, while the official statement confirmed that the sponsor had already given the organisation $24 000 for the training of journalists in ICTs hence we scrapped the award.
According to his own school of thought, Mr Dongozi says since the sponsor had already availed other funds, this justified the removal of the category because all journalists were being trained using the funds.
We however strongly feel that the training journalists has nothing to do with awarding them for personal achievements, especially when all other categories like Health, agriculture, mining, political, business, etc amongst others were all once trained here or there, yet still there got awarded.
here is more from our interview with secretary general.
