The Zimbabwe Republic Police, have successfully used tech to help them nab criminals.
Police detectives from Mbare police camp, in Harare utilized the beauty of technological advancement to nab a rapist on the run.
By incorporating the most used and user friendly mobile platform, WhatsApp, they managed to track a rapist who had raped a 15 year old Murewa girl four times without protection before forcing her out of the room in the wee hours, close to 3am.
The victims then went back to her rural home where a report to the police was made before it was transferred to Mbare police station.. The victim fell prey to a rapist after being introduced by yet a female stranger who told her the man was looking for a maid.
The team is said to have been embarked on a crime awareness campaign and during the exercise, one of the investigating officers saw a person fitting the description given by the girl and went on to take a photo of the suspect and sent to the girl through WhatsApp who positively identified him as the rapist and that lead to his arrest.
The Mbare cops from the Victim Friendly Unit, Georgian Muchanja, Lydia Makonese and Noel Mupako have been named the best cops for March.
So much there for getting connected and using the resources close to us and achieve great results.
The non-digitalised Police system still has a mountain to climb to make sure that they fully integrate tech to achieve daily investigative needs to curb criminology.
