The State owned, Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority, ZESA is introducing a system intended to harness their vehicle fleet problems. The newly introduced system is aptly dubbed ‘Fleet Maintenance System’.
The government parastatal (ZESA) has been at the fore front of technological advancements of late as they have adopted so many initiatives brought about by technology amongst the most popular ones, the prepared meters to its clients around the country.

The organisation is also planning to introduce smart meters which are very economical to both users and the service provider. This has been received with mixed feelings as its installation is a money gobbler though beneficial in the long run.
According to a close source with ZESA which requested anonymity, the ‘Fleet Maintenance System’ installation is currently running and 98 ZESA depots are targeted. “We are currently running a vehicle system installation programme countrywide and we hope before the end of this year will be able to cover our 98 depots countrywide”.
He added that, “We as ZESA have invested so much in vehicles, and of late we have realised the losses that are incurred as a result of abuse of those vehicles. Most employees who have been entrusted with those vehicles are failing to use them cautiously and for the intended purposes hence there is a lot of misuse of those vehicles”.
The system has been introduced to curb the abuse of ZESA property by the employees, it is to make sure that vehicles are monitored 24/7 with help of GPS. The tracking solutions combine sophisticated GPS tracking technology with flexible, advanced mapping and reporting software.
The system will have a Vehicle Location Manager (VLM) installed on the vehicle which collects and transmits tracking data via a cellular or satellite network, whichever works best for the operations.
The device used has the capacity to deliver the data to the hosted application, which one can access through the Web via your desk top, laptop or mobile phone at any time.
This will give one the real-time vehicle tracking updates, including location, direction, speed, idle time, start/stop and more, allowing you to manage a tighter schedule and more efficient fleet.
With this new system, the organization has a 360 degree view of the vehicles. With an easy-to-use dashboard, you can easily pull up information on an individual vehicle or the entire fleet.
Fleet managers can pull up the mapping data in their choice of street map, satellite or hybrid view. Managers can also receive alerts if the system detects a problem with the vehicle’s engine, speed or performance.
