US Government Considers Banning TikTok

The US government is considering banning social media app TikTok amid concerns that the social media app is potentially being used by the Beijing government as a means to surveil and propagandise people.

This come amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China and as scrutiny on TikTok and Chinese technology firms continues to grow.

Tiktok has become the worlds most popular short video app the app was launched in 2017 for iOS and Android in most markets outside of China , it only became available in the United States after merging with Musical.ly on 2 August 2018.

On Monday night, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told fox news that the United States is “certainly looking at” banning TikTok over concerns that it could be used by the Beijing government as a surveillance and propaganda tool

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Fox News that the US government is looking to ban certain social media apps offered by Chinese companies. They include the extremely popular video-sharing app TikTok.

“We are certainly looking at it With respect to Chinese apps on peoples’ cellphones, the United States will get this one right too,” Pompeo said.

“We have worked on this very issue for a long time.”

“Whether it was the problems of having Huawei technology in your infrastructure we’ve gone all over the world and we’re making real progress getting that out. We declared ZTE a danger to American national security,” Pompeo added, citing the two Chinese teleommunications networking companies.”

In response to Pompeo’s remarks, a TikTok spokesperson said, “TikTok is led by an American CEO, with hundreds of employees and key leaders across safety, security, product, and public policy here in the U.S. We have no higher priority than promoting a safe and secure app experience for our users. We have never provided user data to the Chinese government, nor would we do so if asked.”

TikTok is a Chinese video sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance a Beijing based internet technology company founded in 2012 which used to create short dance , lip sync comedy and talent videos.
