Perceived by many as an alternative to remote satellite, Telone proved that the new and affordable mode of connectivity can still be used even urban areas, although the installation cost of $670, will likely face resentments. The Telone Boss said there can still be payment arrangements for those who need the service, accumulating a monthly fee of only $50.

VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is a satellite service capable of reaching very remote locations and is particularly useful where communications infrastructure is limited or non-existent. The service is used mainly by corporates and individuals who are in critical internet need outside the sphere of their offices or basic connectivity points.

The Ka band spectrum VSAT service is a progressive step after the C band and KU band spectrum respectively. C-band was the first band to be used for satellite communication systems; whereas the K-band is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum in the microwave range of frequencies. In radar applications, it ranges from 12-18GHz (GigaHertz) according to IEEE Standard 521-2002 radar frequency band nomenclature standards.

Priced at $670.00 for the entire installation, the package typically consists of a mobile satellite unit that can be moved to any area, an indoor unit and connects WiMax (both wired and wifi). The satellite unit is powered through the grid, solar feed, generator, etc which makes it compatible with even the remotest area thinkable. Ka Band Satellite Benefits:

  • High speed and high throughout connectivity delivered to any location.
  • True physical diversity for terrestrial networks.
  • Fast installation and redeployment crew ensure connections are available when you need them. It would take at most 48 hours to uninstall and reinstall in a separate location.
  • Low cost terminal equipment.
  • Flexible pricing models.

This Vsat can be used by practically anyone, from SMEs, Residential to schools; Local government, mobile teams and small sites of large enterprises. The TelOne National Sales Manager, Mrs. Rugonye had the honors of presenting this welcome technological equipment. A satisfying time of questions followed when the various delegates’ queries were quenched by the TelOne staff’s responses.

TelOne’s goal is for everyone to have “Affordable broadband connectivity; Wherever you are in Zimbabwe.” In that regard, the company offers a number of packages to suit every customer’s pocket. The monthly package rates are as follows..

Package Down Speed Up Speed Allowance Monthly Cost
Starter 512Kbps 256Kbps 8Gb $51,00
Education Light 512Kbps 256Kbps 20Gb $51,00
Education Plus 1Mbps 512Kbps 60Gb $136,00
Professional 1Mbps 512Kbps 30Gb $204,00
Enterprise 2Mbps 768Kbps 200Gb $813,00

One low point to note, however, is that the equipment, though weather-resistant physically, can also be affected by conditions of heavy rains and strong winds, just like most satellite gadget in the market. The signal is lost or experiences some glitches as a result; it however self-resets automatically as soon as the “weather-moment” passes, back to normal operation.

For a demo, TelOne mounted the Ka band equipment and available free internet access throughout the ceremony, the WiFi signal was accessible within a 100m radius.
