A total of 10 teams are expected to participate in this year’s Kariba Invitation Tiger Fish Tournament (KITFT), ‘Test of the Best’ contest which takes place today (Friday) and on Saturday on Lake Kariba in the Charara area.
The ‘Test of the Best’, which is being sponsored by mobile phone network Telecel, is a continuation of last year’s annual KITFT, which was held in October.
Apparently they were about 140 teams of fish mongers which took part in the tournament in October. The top 10 teams in that tournament are competing against each other in the ‘Test of the Best’ competition to select the ultimate winner. There will be prizes for the winning teams.
Telecel was one of the major sponsors at the main event last year after it upgraded its sponsorship to gold from silver the previous year. It also sponsored a major team, Stryke Telecel.
Telecel Zimbabwe public relations and corporate social responsibility manager Francis Chimanda said Telecel was proud to be part of this catch-and-release edition of ‘Test of the Best’.
“We are particularly proud to be associated with this event because it is a good way of championing tourism and conservation efforts while bringing attention to Zimbabwe as a tourism brand,” he said.
With a catch-and-release event a marshall is allocated to each boat to facilitate the weighing and recording of weights before releasing the fish.
As with the main event, tiger fish will be the only species being fished. Tiger fish are a fierce species. They are the hardest fighting fresh water game fish in the world, which makes the tournament one of the most challenging and exciting.
KITFT has become one of the country’s premier sports events, attracting many tourists to the country. Last year’s event was the 52nd edition of the tournament.
The teams that will be taking part in the ‘Test of the Best’ tournament are Charter Africom, Charter B Hino Swift, Team Nissan, St Elmo’s Yamaha, Rem Charter X, Mega, Team Sakunda, Charles High, Fisheagles and Lac Bushcats. Each team will consist of four to six people.
All the best to the teams
