#TechExchange: Cisco vs Huawei, A Battle Of The Visionaries

As the battle for relevance gets hotter, we have seen the berth of several ICT network vendors and notably among them Huawei, a Chinese Multinational Company coming in to battle the industrial champions Cisco for honors in the data and telecommunications services provision.

By Eng. Shingie Lev Muringi

In the same circles we also Sony Ericsson, Lucent Alcartel, Microtik, Trendnet among other newly promoted network equipment vendors but the main battle lies between Cisco and Huawei who have become industrial pacesetters in the past years. As a network engineer, l decided to air my comparison on the battle between these two giants and very subject to my own personal experiences. You are also free to debate my findings via my below contact details and our Technomag Facebook Page.

Cisco Huawei Lead

As the “Big Brother” in global network devices market, Cisco has dominated the area of core network devices like routers and switches for a long time. Yet, Huawei is the leader in Chinese telecom network device market and has recently emerged as the new force in the ICT market around the world. What advantages do they have respectively and when will Huawei exceed Cisco?

As the “Big Brother” in global network devices market, Cisco has dominated the area of core network devices like routers and switches for a long time. Yet, Huawei is the leader in Chinese telecom network device market and has recently emerged as the new force in the ICT market around the world. What advantages do they have respectively and when will Huawei exceed Cisco?

The reasons that Huawei becomes so strong are not only due to the support from the government, but also because of its powerful local support capability. There are bugs in the high-end devices, and this is inevitable. If two Cisco engineers are assigned to solve the problem, Huawei can assign 20 engineers to fix it. Besides, if one major client like Liquid Telecom or TelOne has customized requirements, Huawei can ask product engineers to work in the client office as soon as possible, even Cisco cannot do this. This kind of quick response ability is obviously the advantageous factor for Huawei to exceed Cisco in its own home court.

Cisco’s Advantages

In fact, most of Cisco’s technologies are bought from outside. A lot of startups in the Silicon Valley have various designs with the support of venture investment. If they cannot make products with their designs, they will sell them to other big enterprises, including Cisco. The strong ability of Cisco is to find out a “potential stock” out of a lot of companies.

Also Cisco’s devices operate at very fierce levels if we are to look into the running of algorithms when switching and routing data. Also, all Cisco’s devices have proven to be resilient when in it comes to overloading issues and they can operate as per configuration.

Cisco remains a very intimidating force in the market with its ability to support the deployment of all Cisco technologies through its best second to none Cisco Networking Academy (Netacad). Cisco has been able to virtually equip all its aspiring technocrats to master the vendor’s technologies through its border-less learning academy.

Up to date, Cisco Network Technicians and Engineers are the highest payed personnel in the ICT industry due to the power of the vendor’s certification across the globe.

When will Huawei exceed Cisco?

It is easy to answer. Huawei will exceed Cisco when broadband is not so demanding. Once users are not so demanding about broadband, the advantages of Cisco on top products will disappear. By that time, Huawei has cost advantage, which will beat Cisco. The present of Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson are examples for the future of Cisco. Of course, Internet will also be the sunset industry till that day.
