Students embrace education 5.0

Students from various local tertiary institutions have welcomed the education 5.0 which will produce entrepreneurs that will help improve production and create employment.

Minister of Higher tertiary Innovation, Science and Technology Education Professor Amon Murwira noted that the government is set to phase out the education 3.0 which produced the literate students for employment and move to education 5.0 that includes innovation and industrialisation which produces entrepreneurs.

“By August 2020 our higher and tertiary education will be education 5.0 compliant. We are doing away with programmes which are just designed to dump graduates in the street selling airtime and bell clothes. The education 5.0 has a purpose to produce goods and services not the education 3.0 which mainly consists of teaching, research and communication”, says Prof Murwira.

In an interview with Mildred Desouza, a student at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) said they have welcomed the government’s initiative as it will create students ready to tackle life problems.

“Being your own boss is always the goal with us students. We see our seniors after graduation ending up in difficult situation to find the job but if one is well equipped innovatively our nation will be productive,” she said.

Another student from the University of Zimbabwe who spoke to TechnoMag also concurred with his counterpart.

The student, Tinashe Mupira added that the education 5.0 will boost the economy in near future as students are taught industrial skills.

However, some students said although the initiative encourages self-sustenance among graduates the government should not completely do away with the old education system but rather look for a way they can incorporate both education 3.0 and education 5.0.

“ Growing up as a student I always wanted to do Peace development studies, so to realise that the government is going to scrap such programmes pains my heart , and my other question is what criteria is government going to use to qualify a program to be useful or useless?” queried Constance Mukaro.
