Econet Plays Pivotal Role In Corporate Social Responsibility.


To whom much is given, much is required, it goes without saying Econet Wireless, has never been found wanting. From the cholera disaster, the cyclone Idai, these are just but the latest signals from one much given seed to give back to its own soil.

Companies do not operate in a vacuum but in communities and they are expected to contribute to the well-being of communities they operate in. When our national Netball team was seeing the reds, stuck up without basics deserving a national team, Econet was amongst the companies that rose to the occasion.

Corporate Social Responsibiliy (CSR) is a company’s commitment to operating in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner whilst balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. It is an opportunity for companies to demonstrate their good corporate citizenship in communities by meeting a need that would have risen.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe continues to partake in different initiatives aimed at making a positive impact in society. Apart from being a telecommunications company, Econet has always given back to the same society that has given it so much life.

Becoming a household name takes more than just a bigger market share in any sector, rather standing out amongst other businesses includes focusing on getting involved in local communities. Recently, Econet gave a boost of RTGS$225 000 with their separately ,listed Cassava company coming in with $200 000 as well to the National Netball Gems.

The huge sponsorship was towards their upcoming tournament in Liverpool to ensure that their expenses and well being is catered for. A move that has been commended by various stakeholders in the sports fraternity as empowering the girl child.

Sport and fitness activities such as the Kwese Sevens International Rugby Tournament Victoria Falls Marathon where they have promoted the scouting of talents from the grassroots and encouraged health as well as fitness respectively.

Econet has managed to add real, immeasurable value through establishing themselves as pillars of the community with other initiatives such as the Joshua Nkomo Scholarship Fund where hundred’s of the country’s brightest high school and tertiary students are granted scholarships.

The Capenaum Trust which also transforms the lives of orphaned children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

During the cholera outbreak, Econet availed $10 million towards the containment of a dual outbreak of cholera and typhoid following the declaration of the outbreak as a disaster by the government.

As part of the cyclone emergency relief efforts, the company collectively contributed RTGS$5 million after the disaster hit the Eastern Highlands area which saw the displacement of people from their homes and resulting in loss of life for some.

Not only have their financial contributions kept several communities alive and thriving, and we do acknowledge how much Econet has given back to communities.
