The mobile network operator was the only operator to gain subscribers as its main rival econet lost over 340 thousand active subscribers and telecel lost 114 000 subscribers during the course of the year according to the report.
As for the market share of active subscribers Netone continued to close in starting the year at 33, 8% and ending the year at 36, 6 %. Econet the largest mobile telecommunication company dropped its market share from 52, 1 % at the start to close the year at 49, 4%.
The year saw Econet dropping its active subscriber’s market share to below 50% a first in as many years. Telecel’s market share ended the year at 14% from 14, 1%. According to the report “over the course of 2016 Econet and Telecel’s market share fluctuated whereas NetOne’s market share was steadily increasing.
“Netone has been on the forefront of innovations and value adding services which has made it offer cheaper and efficient products and this has led to the subscribers flocking to the one sleeping giant.” said an executive
The competition in the telecoms has reached fever pitch and this has benefited the subscribers, at most, hoping the government does not come in to regulate pricing but allow the industry to self regulate.
