Following a board meeting held early this year, the ZBC board decided to honour Mavhura for his outstanding performance after being satisfied with their observations.
“The decision was made after observing Mr. Mavhura’s performance, conduct, competencies, qualifications and commitment to the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation. The appointment is for a fixed term of five years. It is performance based. His performance targets include managing ZBC professionally, following the principles of good corporate governance; ensuring sustainable profitability and declaring dividend to the Shareholder by 2019; playing central role in the ongoing national digitisation process and improving quality of programs on both radio and television,” said Father Munyoro.
Muchechetere was axed in 2015 following allegations of massive corruption and embezzlement of funds at the state broadcaster.
According to reports, Muchechetere who was appointed substantive CEO in 2009 gobbled not less than $2.3 million over a period of five years in salaries and allowances.
Mavhura’s appointment is likely to return ZBC to profitability after years of incurring losses.
By 2015, ZBC had been generating around $270 000 per month against a budget of $ 2.3 million of which $1.6 million was going towards salaries.
