Econet founder, Mr Strive Masiyiwa has clarified on reports claiming he attained British Citizenship while stating that he is Zimbabwean.
Masiyiwa was recently named the first black billionaire in the United Kingdom.
However, reports claimed that he had attained British Citizenship
In an interview, Masiyiwa said,” Someone told me that a publication in Zimbabwe had published that I am now a British citizen simply because a newspaper put me on a list with hundreds of other nationalities is truly quite strange.”
“ Fortunately, one’s citizenship cannot be determined by others. I hope that one day soon we will have Black British citizens on the list. These lists are not an achievement in of themselves; you don’t wake up and say .1 would like to be on such and such rich list.”
He added that I’m not British, I’m Zimbabwean. The article simply said the first black billionaire to live in Britain. There are many billionaires on the list who are residents of the UK, but not British citizens.
Masiyiwa’s wealth is estimated to be £1.087 billion, which elevated him into the ranks of Britain’s super-rich.
The 60-year-old businessman, who also chairs Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a pan-African fibre-optic operator, a subsidiary of Econet, was in January also named among Africa’s richest businesspeople
