Econet Wireless Zimbabwe  yesterday launched the EcoSchool Zero, a broadband based complimentary  package to their recently lauched Ecoschool where over 50 educational websites will be available to the general public’s perusal for free! Well almost, as the only requirement is having $0.50 to buy an Econet line and visiting the sites if you already don’t have one!

The launch held at the HICC saw students, teachers and school heads (Econet services main end-users) sharing their testimonies in how Econet has added value and ease to their learning experience. All testimonies summed up to praising the innovative group for providing mobile based solution to their educational experiences.

Econet`s “gesture” comes at a time the mobile technological company had previously launched The EcoSchool. With  EcoSchool Zero, the cost of browsing and reading from the sites is free! That means notes; lectures and tutors can be accessed for free.

The group has also said it has chosen some of the best educational websites for their zero list, that cover a wide range of studies for different groups students at different level of education (even kindergarten).

For sites that provide video (YouTube) links, the data accumulated will be charged on normal Econet rates. The Zero charge is strictly for basic html browsing. The service can also be accessed through hideous feature phones! Yes, unfortunately it’s true no excuses.

The CEO of  Econet services Mr Mandivenga said Econet is always looking for solutions to the problems faced by the society, he went on to stress that on his personal capacity he has no sleep as he will be acing to find ways in how Econet can improve and inspire the society like their vision “inspired to change your world”

He further pointed out that the robust groups’ aim was to make education affordable and accessible to all, given Zimbabwe’s current high mobile penetration rate. With a motto what can be seen can be changed and what can’t be done should be done, Econet seeks to bring relevance to the statistics of mobile penetration through the provision of mobile solutions to the everyday life of the nation.

In conclusion he urged the end users of their services to come forward with their challenges so that their tech gurus can design a solution for them, even when they don’t know what they want!

The Econet Zero launch has truly answered one burning question in how the society can derive value and benefits from mobile technology! A First on its own in the world where a mobile technology company provides such services for free, Econet has truly pioneered an innovative solution.

Deservingly no wonder it bagged the prestigious Global Mobile Award for its Energies the chain vaccine project that it’s currently running here in Zimbabwe.
