Econet Reviews Data Tariffs

After the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe ( POTRAZ )  in their first quarter report revealed that the telecommunications sector revenue recorded a $37,1 million decline. It was only a matter of time before service providers would revise the tariffs.

The million-dollar question is who wouldn’t, with the ongoing economic downturn, every business out there is trying to stay afloat and viable.

Sometime last week, Econet advised its subscribers that the data and SMS bundles would be reviewed by the 15th of July. No one had an idea of what was to come but best believe the reviewed data tariffs were a shocker.

The Whatsapp weekly bundle which was $3 inclusive of Pinterest is now $4.50 for 100MB. The daily data bundle which was a 2 gig package rose from $5 to $12. This is more than double the previous price, giving the tariff a hundred percent plus increase.

The 250MB daily bundle which was $ 2.50 is now $3.75. The SMS bundles have also been increased but not as bad as the data bundles.

The weekly SMS bundle with 125 texts used to go for a mere dollar and it’s now $1.50.  This could be the start of an increase in the telecommunications sector. There is a high chance that Telecel and NetOne will follow suit soon.
