Econet Blocks Bulk SMS Movement

Zimbabweans pushing Bulk SMS are crunched down as Econet closed down the movement of bulk SMS on both solicited and unsolicited messages from international gateways.

ThE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (Potraz) has reportedly banned bulk text messages from international gateways until after the July 31 poll, the end of Elections.

It is however unclear whether the order was only directed to Econet Wireless Zimbabwe as all other mobile operators are still pushing bulk SMS except for Econet.

A rep from one of Zimbabwe`s largest web based and web hosting service, ZimHosts raised serious concerns against the move.
He said that it is very disappointing to note that all of a sudden we can no longer Push Bulk SMS to our clients yet there was never even a public announcement to warn or advise us in due progress.

Business has been disrupted as millions of bulk SMS in Zimbabwe are pushed via international gateways as it has become prohibitive for local players to get short codes or push bulk SMS due to the exorbitant licencing costs.

Bilk SMS has become a cheap way to send direct messages to clients at very low charges of 2,5 cents per text compared to the local 8cents plus being charged by the mobile operators.
