Africom`s Guro-o, The Next Game Changer!

Forget all the noise on “previous Voip like” platforms which have been launched locally, and also ignore people pouring water on the newly launched Guro-0`s  Voip, service,  all I can say is that the game changer is finally here.

Africom has launched a “Real VoIP” service that is set to change the way we communicate over mobile phones using internet access to call real numbers, not friends on your app.

Of course we could have been using VoIP via our Skype, Google talk, Viber, fring and many other apps using our braodband service providers, but to say we have always been using voice calls on  VoIP app on our mobile platforms is an understatement i personally vehemently deny.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on the 26th of January, launched its much anticipated VoIP service, which honestly ended up as a pure “nonentity”.

To prove that Econet has buried the service, just recentl, during their results announcement, Econet Wireless` CEO Mr Douglas Mboweni announced that they will not be running VoIP as there are apps like whatsapp and viber already doing the same thing.

Ofcourse this was a backtracking excuse, should that point be true, then they would have seen the sense before launching their VoIP in the first place.

The truth is no mobile operator would be comfortable in launching VoIP service as an app in their own platform as this will obviously chew in their GSM network revenue, which is their major business focus and source of revenue.

VoIP is a fiery contender, which no player would dare want to initiate, the only reason we were sceptical about the Econet`s VoIP launch, which has virtually died a natural death.

Econet has also in the past killed any possible VoIP deal across their network

What Africom is now offering is a real threat, forget Whatsapp, forget Skype, this app is too dangerous to be left unchallenged and surely set to be the game changer!

To simplify it, its like having your app, like whatsapp, where you can text anyone “for free”, as long as you are connected to the  internet, then you have an option to call, not just people on whatsapp, but this time any other number even those  who are not on the platform and you are only charged 6 cents per minute, against the current 23cents per minute.

It is not clear whether the calls will be charged at outside local network rates of 12cents per minute.

of course there are hidden charges, you will have to be connected to the internet, this will also mean you will be charged twice at the local internet connection fee, depending with your ISP, and yes  Voice traffic is much higher than simple texts.

Still this may turn out to be way too lower than the standard calling platforms.

Other cool alternatives would be calling from a wifi hotspot, and if you have free internet access or cheap ones, then you will realise the benefits of such a service.

Africom may have erred in calling it a first in Africa, but surely its a first in Zimbabwe.
