520 000 Zim Healthcare Records Leaked


There were over 520 000 leaked healthcare records between February and March this year on the back of unsecured systems vulnerable to cyber attacks in Zimbabwe, it has emerged.

This was said by Bitcrack cybersecurity Chief Technology Officer Dimitri Fousekis at the Cyber Security Conference held last week. Bitcrack is a research agency which tracks cyber attacks. 

“We came across 500 000 leaked health records in February 2018 and 20 000 healthcare records in Zimbabwe,” he said.

Contrary to popular belief that the financial sector is the most vulnerable, he said the medical sector was the most affected with 40 percent of leaked passwords globally.

“Hackers are after sensitive and confidential information found in healthcare records,” said Fousekis.

After the healthcare sector are government departments with 30 percent of leaked passwords and the financial sector with 20 percent with Manufacturing sector having 5 percent.
