Potraz calls out all stakeholders to fight cybercrime

Potraz director-general Gift Machengete has called out the government, international organizations and big businesses to join hands and fight cybercrime.

Machengete said a multi-stakeholder participation in cybersecurity is critical. He was speaking at the Cyber Security Indaba held in Bulawayo last week.

“The Internet is too big and the threats too complex for any single entity to respond by itself. We will only be truly effective when we work together, pool resources, share information and coordinate our response,”

“We have to partner as government, international organizations and big business in realizing a more robust and effective offensive against cybercrime. It is for this reason that I am happy that government and private sector have come together to organize this event and the whole National Cyber Security Month,” he said.

This comes after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported 4 001 counts of cyber-related crimes were committed in which the country lost $40 million with phishing being the most committed crime early this year.

In early October the cabinet approved the Cyber Bill which is expected to cover the establishment of the cyber security centre, offences relating to computer systems, computer data, data codes and devices, offences related to electronic communication material.
