Zim Women In Engineering Chapter Launched

The Zimbabwe Women in Engineering Chapter which seeks to capacitate female engineers was launched last Friday in Harare.

Speaking to TechnoMag on the sidelines of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers Awards Dinner, one of the founders of the Zimbabwean chapter, Engineer Farai Mavhiya-Bhiza said they came up with it after attending a conference in South Africa.

“We were in South Africa from April 12 and April 13 2018 for a stakeholder engagement conference for the promotion of women in engineering in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The WomEng SA won a grant to build capacity of women in engineering chapters within Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Tanzania and Malawi. The drive is #1millionGirlsInSTEMBy2020,” she said. She said donations of $15 are welcome to support the capacitation of women engineers in ZImbabwe.

She said the number of women taking up engineering profession has been rising.

“There is an increase in uptake of engineering, and technician programmes lately. We just want to push more and ensure that these ladies remain here in Zimbabwe and not leave upon completion,” said Eng Mavhiya-Bhiza.

At the awards ceremony, Nyangani Renewable Energy Pvt Ltd donated $500 to the Zimbabwe Women in Engineering Chapter.
