Nokia's Android Launch Dates Set

Finnish startup HMD Global will launch its first Nokia branded Android phone in London on August 16.

The world will set its eyes on this new flagship whose renders dubbed the Nokia 8, were leaked online. The expectation is that its flagship Android-powered handset will be revealed, kicking off the rush of high-end mobile launches that will include the Samsung Galaxy Note 8; Apple’s iPhone 7S, 7S Plus and iPhone 8; and Google’s Pixel 2 family of devices.

The rumour mill has it the Nokia 8 will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 processor and contain dual rear-facing cameras. As with previous Nokia offerings, the phone will pack a Carl Zeiss lens — which should whet the appetite of fans of the Lumia 1020, and its predecessor the 808 PureView.

Last week’s leak was of a blue handset, but silver and copper variations could also be in the works.

Although HMD created its fair share of hype with its 3310 reboot, launching a successful high-end Android phone will be an altogether different proposition. The device will be squaring up against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Google Pixel — two immaculate Android handsets.

The Nokia 8 will join the Nokia 5, and Nokia 3 handsets that were announced at Mobile World Congress, and the Nokia 6 which debuted to much surprise during CES2017 in January. The Nokia 6 is on sale in a number of BRIC territories, while all three handsets have been given a release date in the UK – traditionally one of the strongholds of the Nokia smartphone brand.

As well as the Nokia and Zeiss brand names, HMD Global’s major selling point is its use of pure Android unadorned by pre-installed third-party applications and services, or overburdened with native applications. HMD Global has also committed to applying the Android security patches in a timely manner.

The Nokia 8 may not have the ultimate top specifications of a flagship in this current generation, but that should offer it a slight price advantage. Coupled with the licensing of the Nokia name, HMD Global is fighting hard to be seen as a Top 5 player in the smartphone market. The Nokia 8 will be the biggest card it has played yet.

The HMD event is set to kick off at 7:30PM London time (2:30PM ET) on August 16th.
