Six Tech Players Standout Under The ICT Innovation Fund


Bulawayo roared to life last night as the ministry of ICT postal and courier  services, through Potraz kicked off the ICT innovation fund, which attracted a whooping 43 tech startups to register for the event.

The event saw all the young startups convening at Holiday Inn to pitch their already existing projects and emerging ideas before the minister of ICT Postal and couriers services Hon Supa Mandiwanzira and other guests who toured their stands.

Only six of these players stood out, or rather were just fortunate to get an edge above others, landing the top hall of fame position to walk away with top prizes from the event, as the government was prepping the stage for the showdown.

Speaking during the official unveiling of the pitch night for the Matabelelend and Midlands province, The Minister of ICTPS said he agreed with operators to create a platform that supports local developers and nurture them to create solutions that can impact our economy.

“ We strongly believe as government that these young tech players can create solutions for the nation that can not only grow the economy, but create future employment and revenue to even benefit the telecom operators in Zimbabwe, not these Over The Top Services we have”

The minister said that $2,5 million is already set aside for the fund, to kick start, as government creates a conducive environment to stir the development of ICTs in Zimbabwe.

The top six players including the most outstanding three tech players were not the ultimate ICT Fund beneficiaries, but merely the highlights which will be pitched to showcase the need to support our our Zimbabwean tech players.

Hundreds of delegates including top ICT executives from various firms, ISPS, mobile networks and telecom service providers were present to witness first hand what the budding ecosystem had to present, most players stampeded to offer some give away prices which ultimately made everyone a winner of a certain prize for simply pitching up.

The top 3young Innovators who stole the limelight for the day were projects solving different problems from the top here are the results.

Number 1: Dr X

The first position was taken by Dr X, a medical app project that detects certain specific symptoms with purported 86% accuracy rate being run by a young man called Gift Gana,

Number 2: ZimHosts

The second position was won by Zimhosts, a web design and hosting company that pitched their brand new baby called OYOS, Own Your Own System, which has capacity to integrate online payments and e-commerce for users. The organization was represented by SMK Chiinze.

Third Position: Infinite Gaming

➢ These crazy gamers literally brought their gaming work-stations, [powered by mad processors, heavy graphics adapters and gaming controls as they introduce their own gaming apps.

They walked away with exactly the same package with number 2.
The other last three winners who walked away smiling with unique prizes were the next three players which made into the top six without any particular included Neon, Code Marshal and HackShack.

They all walked away with 10 gig public wifi from TelOne, 1 ADSL home plus package including free installation with three months subscriptions while NetOne offered them $100 cash package, , Wifi dongle and T-Shirts.
The event was well coordinated , thanks to local startups and young tech enthusiasts who included Terence Mugava, a co-founder of Educate and Host of emerging ideas pitch nights in Bulawayo. The startups focus on the way Zimbabweans access education and the value they derive. He achieves this using a cockatail of education loans, career guidance and debt counseling.

Another name Takunda Chingonzo, who rose to fame for his Neo-Lab projects and Sai Sai projects, though currently he has moved to focus on his new brainchild called tech village, a startup driving the next generation of tech players in Bulawayo.
